UCF doctor working with Axiom to study effects of space travel on eyesight

ORLANDO, Fla. – UCF Overall health ophthalmologist Mehul Patel is planning to review how the microgravity natural environment of house impacts the structure and purpose of the eye.

Patel is a person of a few physicians with UCF Health performing together with Axiom Place and two Israeli clinical facilities to carry out clinical reports with the civilian travellers of the future SpaceX Crew Dragon flight.

“We wanna know what takes place mainly because we know that in for a longer period length place travel, gravity plays a really crucial purpose in how our entire body functions and how we see,” Patel stated. “Space is pretty thrilling mainly because we never actually have a way to mimic what occurs to the system when we go into a diverse ecosystem.”

Patel will be using a noninvasive solution known as optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) with the extensive imaging machine identified as the Spectralis HRA+OCT2 on mortgage to UCF from Heidelberg Engineering in Germany. This is the first house eye study that will gain from this type of in-depth imaging.

“The variety of imaging that we’re obtaining from the back again of the eye has by no means been attained in advance of,” Patel mentioned. “From an ophthalmology standpoint, we’re essentially looking at the blood stream and blood vessels of the again of the eyeball in greater detail.”
