I explored Vijayawada without a fixed itinerary and enjoyed it more

I usually have a well-planned schedule when I visit a new city. I know what to see, where to eat, and how long to spend at each attraction. That was exactly how I intended to explore Vijayawada too.
However, somewhere between my first cup of filter coffee and a spontaneous turn into one of the city’s bustling streets, I stopped looking at my itinerary. I let the city set the pace rather than chasing each landmark in turn. It ended up being one of the more enjoyable ways in which I’ve experienced a destination in a while.
I had seen a lot of Vijayawada by the end of the trip, though not always in the order I had intended.
Vijayawada surprised me before I visited a single attraction
I thought Vijayawada would feel like a bustling business district. It has that energy, no doubt, but it also has an unexpected sense of balance. The roads are wide, there are views of the Krishna River, and the hills surround parts of the city.
All this immediately made it feel more scenic than I’d imagined. There was movement everywhere, yet it never felt overwhelming. Rather than hurrying to the closest attraction, I just took some time to stroll around and let the city introduce itself.
Vijayawada’s streets led me to unexpected discoveries
When I wasn’t looking for anything specific, I found some of my favourite moments in Vijayawada. A colourful flower market caught my attention, a small temple tucked between shops invited me inside, and a roadside stall serving hot punugulu tempted me to stop for a snack. I wandered through busy neighbourhoods where locals were going about their daily routines, and somehow that felt just as interesting as visiting the city’s famous landmarks.
When you’re not looking at directions all the time, you start to notice details that you would otherwise miss.
Vijayawada’s attractions were better without the rush
I eventually arrived at Kanaka Durga Temple, situated atop Indrakeeladri Hill with a view of the Krishna River. Staying in a hotel in Vijayawada with easy access to this landmark made my trip here easier. I took my time admiring the city’s views rather than rushing through the visit because there was another attraction to see.
Later, I strolled along the riverfront and explored the serene environments of Bhavani Island, where families, cyclists, and evening strollers all contributed to a bustling yet relaxed environment. Every stop was more enjoyable because there was no rigid schedule. I never felt as though I had to move on right away.
Vijayawada’s food stops happened naturally
My meal breaks became wonderfully unpredictable when I didn’t have an itinerary. One morning began with soft idlis, crisp vada, and strong South Indian filter coffee. Later, I was eating a traditional Andhra thali on a banana leaf filled with rice, chutneys, dal, and fiery curries.
By evening, street food stalls tempted me with mirchi bajji, punugulu, and freshly prepared sweets. I hadn’t marked any of these locations on my map. They simply appeared when I happened to be hungry. These spontaneous meals turned into some of the trip’s highlights.
Choosing the right Vijayawada hotel gave me more freedom
One decision that worked in my favour was booking one of the popular hotels in Vijayawada near MG Road and Benz Circle. These areas made it easy to reach major attractions, restaurants, shopping streets and the riverfront without spending too much time in traffic. I never felt under pressure to adhere to a strict sightseeing schedule because everything was fairly well connected.
When you’re in the right place, you can feel free to explore without worrying about what to do next.
Final thoughts
The Kanaka Durga Temple, Bhavani Island, the picturesque Krishna River, and vibrant markets are just a few of Vijayawada’s well-known attractions. However, it wasn’t crossing off every location on a list that I most enjoyed. I was wandering through neighbourhoods without a destination, discovering local food by chance, spending unhurried evenings by the river, and letting the city reveal itself one street at a time.
Make generous time in your schedule if you’re planning a trip here. You will be wonderfully rewarded when you don’t feel the need to plan every minute.
